International trade and investment have become a critical component for California’s economic growth and engine for creating jobs – In 2014, goods exports accounted for 7.9 percent of California’s Gross Domestic Product. Further, international trade supported 4.4 million California jobs, and foreign-owned companies employed over 590,100 workers in California.
With over 95 percent of the world’s population and 80% of the world’s purchasing power outside of the United States, the state needs to develop a policy and strategy to expand international trade and investment that is appropriate for California’s position as the world’s 7th largest economy.
