In 2000, Governor Gray Davis founded the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3) and three other University of California institutes for science and innovation. QB3, the only one of the four to focus on life sciences, now brings together over 220 laboratories at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and UCSF to support basic research and training at the highest level.
